Southfield townhouse ‘uninhabitable’ after Christmas morning fire; 2 injured

Officials working to find temporary housing for families

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Officials said a 5-unit townhouse in Southfield has been deemed “uninhabitable” after a Christmas morning fire that injured two people.

The Southfield Fire Department was called to a fire at a townhouse in the 24000 block of Walden Road in Southfield at around 6:30 a.m. on Christmas Day, Dec. 25, 2024.

Fire crews arrived at the scene within five minutes and reported that the structure was fully involved. They began to fight the fire and completed a search and rescue of the building.

Two people were injured. One person was treated at the scene of the fire and the other was transported to a local hospital for more treatment.

The building has been deemed uninhabitable and work is being done to place families in temporary housing. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.

“We are so thankful and grateful that no lives were lost this Christmas Day,” Southfield Fire Chief Johnny Menifee said. “This is another stark reminder of why working smoke detectors are so important.”

Ferndale, Bloomfield Township, Royal Oak, West Bloomfield and Madison Heights fire departments also responded to the fire.
