Authorities identify man shot, killed by Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy

Shooting happened Saturday in Exeter Township

MONROE COUNTY, Mich. – Authorities have released the identity of the man shot and killed by a Monroe County Sheriff’s deputy on Saturday.

The sheriff’s office said that just before 11 a.m. on Saturday, Dec. 28, 2024, a deputy was sent to the 9000 block of Hoffman Road in London Township for reports of a “suspicious subject.”

While investigating that report, a second call was made at 11:30 a.m. from the 6300 block of Bluebush Road in Exeter Township regarding a suspicious subject matching that description of the subject from Hoffman Road.

The deputy sheriff went to the Bluebush Road location and found the subject, who officials said “immediately engaged and began physically assaulting the deputy sheriff.” The deputy sheriff shot the man, who was pronounced dead at the scene.

Authorities later identified the man as Brian Miller, 47.

According to the sheriff’s office, Miller was wanted by the Washtenaw County Sheriff’s Office on two warrants for his arrest for failure to appear on the charges of Larceny from a Person and Resisting & Obstructing. Before the warrant were issued, Miller was released from custody on a $10,000 cash or surety bond on the recent Larceny charge, and a personal recognizance bond for his recent Resisting and Obstructing Law Enforcement charge.

The deputy was transported to an area hospital and is being treated for non-life-threatening injuries.

The shooting is under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office, who were contacted to conduct an independent review.

The sheriff’s office said a potential witness may have left the scene as more officers were arriving. Anyone who witnessed the shooting and assault is asked to call Monroe County Central Dispatch at 734-243-7070.
