According to new numbers from the Detroit Police Department, the city has seen a 19% drop in murders from 2023 with 203. It’s the lowest amount of murders Detroit has had since 1965.

Nationally, the country has seen a 12% drop in homicides.

In addition to a drop in homicides, there’s been a 25% drop in nonfatal shootings in Detroit -- nearly half as many as 2020 -- and thousands of guns have been taken off the streets.

Carjackings have dropped 15% for 2024 with 142.

In fact, every single crime statistic for 2024 is lower than 2023, which also saw historic lows. Violent crime dropped 7% and property crime dropped 4% in Detroit.

The numbers are continuing to trend in the right direction, but why? How?

In addition to continuing its efforts to clear its backlog of felony gun cases, the department has received help from partnerships with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Michigan State Police, federal agencies and community violent intervention groups (CVI).

The program was introduced by then deputy mayor, now interim police chief, Todd Bettison. Using federal American Rescue Plan Act funds, six CVI groups were able to implement their own strategies to reduce crime in hotspots across the city. All six CVI zones exceeded the city average in violent crime reduction.

The city saw a 35% drop in murders and shootings in non-CVI zones, while the six CVI zones averaged a 58% drop:

  • New Era Zone (6 and Greenfield): -37%
  • Detroit 300 Zone (5 and Southfield): -47%
  • Force Detroit Zone (Warrendale): -52%
  • Wayne Metro Zone (Denby): -61%
  • People’s Community Zone (HFHS): -73%
  • Friends and Family (7 and Gratiot): -83%

Murders dropped 45% in CVI zones.
