How are those 2025 New Year’s resolutions going?

The best workout is one you’ll stick to, instructor says

SOUTHFIELD, Mich. – Nearly two weeks into January, how are those resolutions going?

Popular New Year’s resolutions typically include learning a new skill or hobby, saving money, and health and wellness.

When it comes to fitness goals, it can be intimidating to start working out. So, we’re looking at how to make sure you don’t fizzle out before February.

It’s said the only bad workout is the one that didn’t happen. At Franklin Athletic Club, bodies were moving early Sunday morning. The tennis courts were busy before 9 a.m.

“I love the physicality. I love the emotional part of it. The competition,” said Ven Johnson, club member.

A 2024 Pew Research Center study shows 79 percent of participants report their New Year’s resolutions focused on health.

After 30 days? Other studies show 25% of people stay committed.

George Jones, a boxing instructor, told Local 4 people should ditch the fad exercises. Instead, he says the best workout is the one you’ll stick to.

“Even when I get myself out of shape for a little bit -- what I do is I go back to the gym and workout for 15 minutes and I leave. I come back again,” he said. “The next day, 15 minutes.”

Why? He says you’re building a habit as you gradually increase your workout time.

Also, consider a group activity to keep you accountable. These basketball players love the exercise and sense of community created by a friend, Howard Brown.

“He’s recently diagnosed with leukemia,” Jeff Perlman said. “He’s been in chemo. He’s working through it. This is his second bout.”
