Corrections officer, Detroit man arrested for trying to smuggle drugs into Upper Peninsula prison

A Detroit man and a corrections officer from Clinton Township were arrested and arraigned for allegedly trying to smuggle drugs into a prison in the Upper Peninsula.

Edward King, 57, and Andre Taylor, 59, are accused of smuggling drugs into Kinross Correctional Facility in December 2024. The investigation began when authorities received a tip about the smuggling attempt involving a corrections officer after an internal investigation.

Michigan State Police said Taylor was a corrections officer employed with the Michigan Department of Corrections at the time and was on a temporary work assignment to Kinross.

After further investigation, police said they recovered the following from Taylor and King:

  • 15 full sheets of suspected K2 paper
  • 50 A12 suboxone strips
  • 514 N8 suboxone strips
  • 74 grams of marijuana wax
  • 62 grams of methamphetamine

Police said the estimated value of the items that were seized would be about $443,000. Police also seized $4,592 in cash from Taylor, which was suspected to be payment for the illegal operation.

Taylor and King were arrested and lodged in the Chippewa County Jail. Both Taylor and King were arraigned in the 91st District Court. Taylor’s bond was set at $25,000, and King’s bond was set at $150,000. Both have posted bond and are expected to return to court on Feb. 27, 2025.
