DETROIT – A popular downtown Detroit bar is closed after a fire damaged part of the building early Tuesday morning.
The fire broke out in the electrical room of the basement early on Tuesday, Jan. 14, 2025, according to the bar.
They believe a utility explosion outside the bar, which is located on Cadillac Square, caused the fire.
“We are extremely grateful for the swift response of the Detroit Fire Department, whose efforts prevented further damage,” Checker Bar said in a post on social media. “We also want to express our heartfelt thanks to our employees, customers, and the community for their support during this challenging time.”
The bar said it will reopen, but no additional details about when that will happen have been released at this time.
“This is an incredibly difficult moment for our team, but we want to reassure everyone that we are committed to rebuilding and coming back stronger,” said Checker Bar. “Like the phoenix rising from the ashes, we will emerge from this setback with renewed determination.”
The bar said it will keep the public updated on its progress and looks forward to welcoming visitors back as soon as possible.
