‘Medical event’ may have caused deadly crash in Pontiac, police say

Police believe driver experienced ‘medical event’ before crash

PONTIAC, Mich. – A 52-year-old Pontiac man was pronounced dead after the vehicle he was driving crashed into a stopped vehicle, a crosswalk signal pole, and a tree, according to police.

Police said the crash happened at around 6 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, on Auburn Road near South Francis and South Sanford streets in Pontiac.

A Pontiac woman, 69, was driving a 2021 Chevrolet Blazer and stopped on eastbound Auburn Avenue for a red light at South Sanford Street.

The 52-year-old man was approaching the traffic light in a 2023 Dodge Ram, didn’t stop, and struck the Chevrolet and continued through the red light. The Ram left the road, struck a crosswalk signal pole, a tree, and came to rest in a field.

Police said the man was not wearing a seat belt. He was transported to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. Police believe he may have had a “medical event” that caused the crash.

The driver of the Blazer was wearing a seat belt and was not injured.

The crash is under investigation by the Oakland County Sheriff’s Office Crash Reconstruction Unit.
