List: Where to stay warm as sub-zero wind chills, temperatures hit Metro Detroit

Photo by Damian McCoig on Unsplash (Unsplash)

With dangerously cold temperatures hitting the area, many communities have opened warming shelters to help people stay safe.

Wind chills 15 to 25 degrees below zero are forecasted for Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, as an Arctic outbreak brings the coldest air of the season to the region.

It’s important to reach out to a shelter beforehand in the event it may have different operational hours due to Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday.

Here’s a list of warming centers in Metro Detroit:

Detroit

Warming centers

The Detroit Rescue Mission Ministries is activating an overnight respite location at 13130 Woodward Avenue starting Sunday, Jan. 19 beginning at 2 p.m. through Wednesday, Jan. 22 at 2 p.m.

To access these warming centers or year-round emergency shelters, residents should call the City of Detroit’s Housing Services Helpline at 866-313-2520 from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., Monday through Friday.
