SCHOOLCRAFT COUNTY, Mich. – A Wisconsin woman died after crashing her snowmobile into multiple trees in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula last week.

The crash happened at 7:20 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 17, 2025, on the Haywire Grade Trail near Thunder Lake Road in Schoolcraft County’s Inwood Township.

Michigan State Police say the 46-year-old woman from Dodgeville, Wisconsin, was traveling southbound on the trail when she failed to navigate the curve and crashed into multiple trees.

Police don’t believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash.

She was traveling with a group of friends, who were further behind when she crashed. When they arrived at her location, they began administering life-saving efforts and called 911.

Snowmobilers helped troopers get to the crash scene, which was about three miles northwest of Thunder Lake Road.

When they arrived, they administered life-saving measures. Township and county EMS also arrived and assisted.

Despite all of their efforts, the woman was pronounced dead, according to state police.

“We offer our condolences to the family, friends, and all those who knew the victim,” said Lt. Eckola, Michigan State Police Eighth District Public Information Officer. “We would like to thank our troopers, EMS personnel, and all first responders for their efforts, as well as the snowmobilers who assisted in transporting MSP to the crash location and those who provided lifesaving efforts before the arrival of troopers and EMS.”
