DETROIT – The Detroit-based movie “King Blvd” is streaming in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Day.
Local 4 showed you the premiere back in June 2024,, but now the film is available online.
It’s a movie about transforming MLK Blvd into something better for the community.
The movie has been in the works for a long time, with the idea originally sparking in 2008. Those involved say they don’t just want to make people laugh; they also want to inspire.
No matter what city you’re in, the perception of MLK Blvd isn’t always the best, especially on the two-mile stretch of road in Detroit.
Local filmmakers are tackling that topic with a new film called MLK BLVD, in which characters hope to give it a reputation on par with Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. himself.
“It tells you why it’s like that too. You may go around different cities and see MLK and notice in a bad neighborhood, but you don’t know why,” said actor Dez Cortez Crenshaw.
Crenshaw plays the role of “Raheem” in the movie.
“My character, Raheem, is a hustle man. He’s a funny guy in the movie. But he is actually from the MLK area,” Crenshaw said.
Earl Hardy, the director, and Cass Tech graduate wrote him the role.
It’s somewhat bittersweet when asked about what Dr. King himself would think about the streets named after him.
“I think he would be a lime discouraged but at the same time i believe he would understand it’s one step forward. His name is there, people will see it overtime. The area will get better over time, and it won’t go away,” Crenshaw said.
You can now find MLK Blvd streaming on Amazon Prime.
