Water main break in Dearborn Heights turn vehicles into ‘car-cicles’

Residents in Dearborn Heights faced a challenging morning after waking up to find their vehicles encased in ice.

With temperatures expected to stay below freezing for days -- what can even be done to get them out?

Officials with Dearborn Heights spent much of Wednesday, Jan. 22, digging, salting and removing vehicles from where they were frozen in place on Monroe Street.

Residents woke up to find several vehicles to be trapped in thick layers of ice. A crew was out earlier in the morning working on a water main break and pushing water off the street. Due to the cold temperatures, the water was freezing almost immediately on the vehicles.

No defroster or ice scraper could help free the vehicles.

Dearborn Heights Director of Public Safety Paul Vanderplow called them “car-cicles.”

Due to the severity of the ice, several vehicles were hauled off to a garage to thaw.

“We have means by which we can actually have a tow to one of our facilities warm it up and get them back on the road,” Vanderplow said.

Resident Cheryl Fritz was worried the ice would damage the vehicles or that they’d be trapped until spring.

“Thank you so so much. Job well done,” Fritz said. “Thank you, Dearborn Heights, you finally pulled through!”
