‘I’ve been freezing’: Pontiac residents struggle with lack of heat amid brutally cold temps

Woman says she hasn’t had heat since last week

PONTIAC, Mich. – During this stretch of brutally cold weather, residents of an apartment building in Pontiac have complained about little to no heat.

It’s all happening at Carriage Place Apartments, just off Auburn Avenue. Residents are saying one thing, and management is saying another. Either way, Local 4 was there to find a solution.

“Look, it is very cold out here. It’s been constantly no heat or no hot water,” said resident Anita Wolfe.

It’s an apartment building built in the late 1960s. Residents say help is always too late to keep the place warm.

“I’ve been freezing, like I’ve been sick,” Wolfe said.

Wolfe says she hasn’t had heat since last week.

“I don’t know what’s going on with this building. But, we shouldn’t have to get out the shower and not have no heat,” Wolfe said.

The building owned by the Pontiac Housing Commission was originally built in 1968.

According to the department’s website, the two-structure facility underwent a $40.5 million renovation in late 2022, which included HVAC systems.

So, what’s the problem with the heat? Local 4 reporter Victor Williams tried calling management to find out.

“This is Victor Williams from Local 4 News in Detroit. It’s regarding several residents saying they don’t have heat.”

“That is incorrect,” said a woman on the other end of the phone.

After leaving his information, we received a call from the management company KMG Prestige, which said that contractors were working to resolve the issue and had been providing space heaters.

Anyone without heat may not have contacted the building’s office.

Cassandra Bradford says she’s been trying to get help for residents inside the apartment for quite some time.

“A friend of mine just recently moved into this building, and he was a freezing, double amputee. And they told me to my face that it was going to be back on Friday. I come back the next day, and no heat was on. Please just listen to these people, come in here, and help them so this doesn’t happen anymore,” said Bradford.

Management wants to emphasize actually contacting the office if these problems arise.
