Oakland County high school athlete urges heart checks after cardiac scare

No description found

WEST BLOOMFIELD TOWNSHIP, Mich. – It’s the kind of story we’ve reported too many times. A high school athlete suffers a cardiac event, often on the playing field, putting their life in jeopardy.

It happened to Alex Bowerson who was a high school wrestler. He was revived with the help of an AED. Now, he’s warning other high school students to get their heart health checked during a screening event.

Bowerson recently spoke to a group of students at West Bloomfield High School. He told Local 4, “I hope that young people are able to leave this today and maybe just think about where the closest AED is in their rooms. That would be incredible.”

Based on his experience, he also added, “I also encourage any younger athletes who are having chest pain and things like that, which I experienced, to get that checked out.”

Corewell Health is running the free heart check event on February 1st from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. The minimum age is 13 years old.

The screening is at West Bloomfield High School, which also celebrates the first National Youth Heart Screening Day.

You can register online here.

The screening is open to the public, but if you can’t make it, you can also sign up to be alerted about future Corewell screenings.
