Propane explosion inside garage hospitalizes 1 in Livingston County

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. – One man was hospitalized after a propane tank exploded inside of his garage in Livingston County.

The explosion occurred on Thursday (Jan. 30) at 6:53 p.m. on Pheasant Lake Drive off 10 Mile Road near the South Lyon border.

Officials said upon their arrival, they found the garage fully involved as it had propane tanks stored in it, which started exploding.

Green Oak Charter Township Fire Chief Kevin Gentry said that upon hearing the first explosion, a man living in the home came out to investigate the loud noise and was struck by debris from a secondary explosion.

Gentry said the man transported himself to the hospital before being transported to the University of Michigan Hospital, where his condition was unknown.

“The fire was extinguished within an hour by Green Oak Fire Department, along with multiple other fire departments. The second alarm was called due to the exposures to a car, a boat, and the house that were all near the garage that was on fire.”
