TAYLOR, Mich. – A Wayne County man has been charged after he allegedly struck a woman while she was walking her dog and then drove away. The dog was killed in the crash.
Norman Newman, 38, of Taylor, was arraigned on the charges of abandoning/cruelty to one animal resulting in the animal’s death, reckless driving, and operating a vehicle while license suspended, revoked or denied. He was given a $1,000 personal bond.
The hit-and-run happened on Monday, Feb. 3, 2025. Police say a woman walked into the department’s lobby at about 7 p.m. to report it.
She told police that she was walking her dog northbound on the west shoulder of Holland when a white Ford Explorer, also traveling northbound on Holland, crossed the southbound lane and hit her and the dog.
The woman went to an animal hospital in the area, where her dog was pronounced dead.
Police gathered evidence from residents, FLOCK surveillance, and security cameras and determined that Newman was the driver.
He was arrested without further incident on Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2025.
