After further investigation by the police department’s Special Investigation Unit and the U.S. Postal Inspection Service, they surveilled multiple mailboxes that were previously compromised and gathered a description of the vehicle and suspects involved in the scheme.

Detectives observed the suspects using different vehicles when going to mailboxes and allegedly taking outgoing mail.

Authorities eventually followed the suspected vehicle and arrested Darryl Roberts and Brad Stewart, both from Detroit. Police searched the car and found large amounts of stolen mail.

According to investigators, Roberts and Stewart went to 27 different cities and townships throughout six counties in Michigan. The two are allegedly responsible for stealing $1 million worth of checks.

On Feb. 4, 2025, Roberts and Stewart were arraigned for charges of conducting a criminal enterprise. Both were given a $250,000 bond and are required to wear a GPS tether if bond is posted.
