DETROIT – An injured dog was shown during a live stream on social media, and thanks to a tip from a community member, that dog and six other animals were rescued from a home in Detroit.

On the morning of Friday, Feb. 7, 2025, a resident contacted Detroit Animal Care and Control (DACC) about a possible animal cruelty case that was shown on Facebook Live, according to Crystal Perkins, director of Detroit’s general services department.

DACC employees took action and quickly obtained and executed a search warrant at a home in Detroit that same day. No further information about where the house was located was released.

When they arrived, they discovered three dogs and four cats inside the home, according to Perkins.

The dog that had been seen on social media, a young adult female pit bull, had extensive stab wounds and was severely injured.

Two of the dogs were underweight, and so were all of the cats, according to Perkins. One of the cats was also injured.

All of the animals were removed from the home and treated at DACC.

The injured pit bull received extensive medical treatment but is in stable condition and is now with a medical foster.

Perkins encouraged the community to alert them when they see something wrong because while the DACC is out patrolling, they can’t see everything.

“If we had not had the tip from the resident, the community member, the person who saw it, this dog would have sustained much more injuries or could have succumbed to the injuries that they had already received,” Perkins said.

The shelter will hand over its findings to the Detroit Police Department so they can investigate the incident.

“Our employees here they all love animals, they all love dogs, and to see someone just abuse an animal for no reason is very heartbreaking,” said Perkins.

If someone is struggling with a dog, the DACC says they, and other local shelters, always want a person to surrender an animal before abusing it.

The animals rescued from this home will be evaluated by the shelter before being considered for adoption.
