Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel joined attorneys general from at least 20 states in filing a lawsuit to block the Trump administration’s effort to cut funding for the National Institutes of Health (NIH).
The NIH announced last week it was cutting payments towards funding for research institutions that receive its grants. According to the Associated Press, some universities currently receive 50% or more of the amount of a grant to put toward support staff and other needs, but that would be capped at 15%.

The attorneys general claim the rate change is unlawful.
The University of Michigan stands to lose $181 million in funding. The funding cuts could impact “425 NIH-funded trials currently underway, including 161 trials aimed at saving lives,” according to the suit.
