DETROIT – A 36th District Court officer was shot while carrying out an eviction on Detroit’s west side.
It happened at a home on Stahelin Avenue, near Westfield Street, at about 12:45 p.m. on Wednesday, Feb. 12.
Police said the tenant fired multiple shots from inside the home, striking the court officer twice.
He was taken to a hospital for treatment. Police said no officers returned fire.
While the suspect barricaded himself inside the home, police blocked off several streets in the neighborhood.
Cody High School, which is located near the scene, went on lockdown, a DPSCD spokesperson said.
The suspected shooter was taken into custody about two hours later.
36th District Court Chief Judge William C. McConico said in a statement:
“The City of Detroit has implemented a Right to Counsel ordinance to ensure that tenants who cannot afford legal representation have access to it and that their rights are protected. In eviction cases, there is a thorough legal process in place, and when an eviction is ordered, tenants are given appropriate time to get their affairs in order. Court Officers are called to the scene of an eviction as a last resort. Court orders are not optional, and violence is never the answer.”
