DETROIT – Residents of Southwest Detroit are grappling with the aftermath of a severe flood that damaged many homes and properties.
Like many others, the Nolasco family returned to find their home submerged in several feet of water, with appliances and furniture floating in the chaos.
“Everything. Everything to do!” one family member said while cleaning up water and damaged items.
Linda Nolasco shared her concerns: “We were mostly worried about saving our stuff from downstairs, like our dryer and washer.”
The situation is dire, and the Nolasco family is not alone in their struggle.

In response to a water main break that flooded many homes early Monday (Feb. 17) morning, police from Detroit and Dearborn spent Tuesday conducting door-to-door assessments to understand the needs of affected residents.
The water main break that caused the flooding has left many families in urgent need of assistance.
Jennifer Ramirez, a member of the group Detroiters Helping Each Other, is actively distributing emergency supplies such as dog food and blankets.
“We’ve got dog food, blankets. And I’ve still got a whole carload of stuff,” said Ramirez.
Ramirez emphasized the importance of helping those in need, including a local teacher who lost everything.
“She lost everything. Absolutely everything. So, I want to make sure that I come and take care of her,” Ramirez said.
The neighborhood is bustling with activity as residents work tirelessly to salvage what they can.
Octavio Juareglo described the devastation in his home, saying, “Water was this high. Everything was floating down here.”
Despite the overwhelming stress, the community’s efforts to support one another provide a glimmer of hope.
Jessica Ramirez summed up the community spirit by saying, “Alright. Let’s go back to the car and restock up. ” Neighbors continued to step up and offer relief to those in need.
