DETROIT – A Michigan animal shelter is warning residents about a scam that is targeting people who have lost pets.

After posting about their pet being missing, people are allegedly being contacted by scammers who are saying they are with the Michigan Humane Society.

The scammers claim that the person’s pet has been found, but has been injured and they need money to cover the costs.

The Michigan Human Society is alerting residents to be cautious of this scam and said they will never ask someone for money over the phone.

“If you are missing your pet and receive a call like this, do not engage in any way,” said the Michigan Humane Society. “We will contact you if your pet comes into our care with a microchip registered in your name; however, we will never ask for money over the phone and will instead encourage you to come into the shelter. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact us at (866)-MHUMANE.”
