DETROIT – The family of a 19-year-old woman killed in a 2021 gas station shooting is relieved after the shooter was found guilty of first-degree murder.
“It’s just like a weight lifted off of me,” Theresa Dawkins said.
Dawkins’ daughter, Morgan Dawkins, was shot and killed during a mid-day gas station shooting in Detroit in May 2021.
She had just gotten to the gas station with her friend when shots were fired.
After a two-week trial, Timothy Charles McGhee Jr. was found guilty on all charges, including first-degree murder.
“I was crying, and I was pacing the floor, and my heart was just beating so fast,” Theresa said, describing how she felt Friday (Feb. 21) waiting for the verdict.
Theresa said it was hard to sit through the trial, especially listening as McGhee took the stand in his own defense.
“He literally said the words, ‘I shoot first and ask questions later’,” Theresa said.
With the verdict behind them, Theresa said her family was focused on celebrating Morgan’s memory and raising her daughter, who turns seven this year.
Sentencing is set for the end of March 2025.
