How the owner of a Metro Detroit bakery helped a man without a home

Bridgett Watson rallies community to support Donald Spurlock

WOODHAVEN, Mich. – The cold winter months often remind communities of the importance of helping those less fortunate.

In a Downriver community, the spirit of giving is alive and well, as demonstrated by the efforts of Bridgett Watson, the owner of Café Sweets in Woodhaven.

At Café Sweets, the sweetest thing isn’t just the treats, but the heartwarming story of how Watson rallied her community to support Donald Spurlock, an unhoused man.

Watson, who had always dreamed of opening her own sweet shop, found herself in the right place at the right time.

“God puts people in your life for a reason,” she said.

Spurlock is a regular of sorts, but not a customer.

The 67-year-old veteran never asked for money. Instead, he requested empty pop bottles and cans to recycle, aiming to cover his $40 per night stay at a motel. Watson occasionally donated small bills to help him and soon noticed the small things many take for granted.

In December, Watson took to social media to ask for donations of recyclables and a used bicycle for Spurlock, whose bike brakes no longer worked.

The community responded generously, donating money to buy him an electronic bike just before Christmas.

In a video, one can see how Spulock marveled at the surprised gift.

“It’s beautiful,” he said.

Spurlock recently moved into his own apartment and has received a gently used pair of winter boots and a jacket. Donations of household items and recyclables continue to pour in, with the only tip jar at Café Sweets being dedicated to helping him. Nearby businesses also contribute to the cause.

Watson’s efforts have also helped Spurlock buy new glasses while obtaining a driver’s license. The community now hopes to connect the veteran with the social services he needs.

She’s a firm believer in second chances.

“No one deserves to be out in the cold,” Watson said.
