Detroit man reportedly shoots Good Samaritan in the face with flare gun

DETROIT – A 42-year-old man has been charged with attempted murder after reportedly shooting a man in the face with a flare gun who had helped an elderly woman.

It happened Thursday, Feb. 20, outside Wayne State University. According to authorities, Wayne State police were dispatched to a bus stop on Cass Avenue on reports of a shooting, where they found a 33-year-old man bleeding from his right eye. He was taken to a hospital for treatment.

Police believe Daryl Tasmin Smith was harassing an elderly woman on the bus when the victim stepped in to prevent further harassment. When the two got off the bus at Cass and Warren avenues, Smith reportedly took out a flare gun and fired it at the man, hitting him in the eye.

Smith was arrested by Wayne State police shortly after. He was charged Friday, Feb. 22, with assault with intent to murder, assault with intent to do great bodily harm and felonious assault.

His bond was set at $100,000. The probable cause conference is scheduled for March 10.
