Every subject taught at Key Elementary in Oak Park is important, but on this day the writing lesson in Mrs. Flowers' class is taking on special meaning.
Each student shared their values and appreciation with each new sentence jotted down. It’s more than just a letter-writing assignment, each message will be sent to a real-life hero -- servicemen and women.
“The children really put their heart into it. And they thought about the servicemen and how they might be lonely and missing their family,” said teacher Kimberly Flowers. “I think the biggest thing I want them to take away from it is to kind of look outside of themselves and to find a way to give kindness back to someone else.”
