Man shoots himself after kidnapping teen he befriended online, Detroit police say

DETROIT – A 13-year-old has been reunited with their family after police say they were kidnapped by a man and taken to a home in Detroit on Monday.

According to Detroit police, a man in his 40s befriended the teen from Garden City on social media. This led to the two meeting in person.

Detroit police did not specify if the 13-year-old is a boy or a girl.

The man reportedly took the teen to a house in the 6700 block of Penrod Street in Detroit on Feb. 24, 2025. There, the 13-year-old contacted a family member, who then contacted police.

When officers arrived at the house on Penrod Street, the man ran into a back room and shot himself. He was taken to a local hospital and is in critical condition.

Police said the 13-year-old is safe and has been reunited with their family.
