ROMULUS, Mich. – While people start planning summer vacations, local travelers shouldn’t expect to find the best deals when looking for flights out of Detroit Metro Airport.
That’s because Detroit Metro Airport is among the most expensive airports to fly out of domestically, according to data from the U.S. Department of Transportation.
Average domestic travel costs at Detroit Metro Airport
Detroit Metro Airport is the 20th largest airport in the country in terms of passenger volume.
In the third quarter of 2024, domestic airfare out of Detroit was $403.80, landing a spot among the most expensive busy airports to fly from.
Flights from other Michigan airports
Flying out of Grand Rapids was pretty similar to leaving out of Detroit Metro Airport, with the average at $401.36, but flying domestically out of Flint was an average of $238.22.
While Lansing provides another airport option for local travelers, the average airfare for domestic flights was $439.47.

The average airfare for U.S. airports was $365.65 for the third quarter of 2024.
During the same period in 2023 average airfare at Detroit Metro Airport was at $402.23 and $432.99 in 2022.
