Ukrainian Americans express mixed emotions over Trump-Zelenskyy clash at Warren Cultural Center

WARREN, Mich. – There was much to discuss Friday at the Ukrainian Cultural Center in Warren.

Ukrainian Americans gathered and shared their thoughts about the Oval Office clash between President Donald Trump and President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

“Today was very devastating for me, for my friends, for my Ukrainian families and relatives,” Olena Danylyuk, president of the Ukrainian-American Civic Committee of Metropolitan Detroit, said.

Many people said the disappointment came after hoping the meeting would be prosperous.

“All day, Ukrainian immigrants and refugees was hoping today was going to be a big day in Ukrainian history,” Andriy said. “Like a first step of the peaceful process.”

Most everyone at the cultural center expressed support for how Zelenskyy carried himself.

“I’m glad the Ukrainian president stayed strong today,” Zahaiko said.

Feelings were split about how Trump handled the meeting.

“How can (Trump) tell Zelenskyy that he doesn’t have to be at the table? That’s his country,” Ukrainian Cultural Center President Lesia Florchuk said. “How can he do that? And today was an embarrassment for the American people.”

Andrew Powers remains hopeful that Trump will deliver on his promises.

“Maybe today was a step backward or a bump in the road, but I’m still very confident that President Trump will reach the proper end,” Powers said.
