DETROIT – A Wayne County man with a series of felony convictions is facing more charges after two gun-related incidents in Detroit.

The first incident happened in March 2024. According to court documents, Detroit police officers went to a home on Whithorn Street on reports of domestic violence. The victim told police that her ex-boyfriend Richard Lee Hughes kicked in her door, ran inside and trashed her home before punching and pistol whipping her. He then left.

Police said he was not at the home when they arrived.

Hours later, Detroit police received a second 911 call after Hughes reportedly came back to the home. Authorities said police searched the home and found Hughes hiding under a pile of clothes on a balcony.

A pistol matching the description provided by the victim was also found in the laundry.

A year later, on Monday, March 3, Detroit police were on patrol when they witnessed Hughes walking on Elmo Street. Police said the butt of a gun was visible sticking out of Hughes' jacket pocket.

When asked if Hughes had a Concealed Pistol License, he reportedly said “huh?” and ran away. While running away, police said they saw the gun fall from his pocket.

The gun was recovered and Hughes was arrested again.

According to court documents, Hughes is a convicted felon and is prohibited from possessing firearms under federal law. He reportedly was convicted in 2003 of unlawful driving away, in 2007 of unarmed robbery, in 2017 of assaulting/restisting/obstructing a police officer and in 2018 with AIDS -- sexual penetration with uninformed partner.

Due to these prior convictions, police believe Hughes is aware he’s a convicted felon and is unable to possess a firearm, but still did so in March 2024 and 2025.

He is facing charges of felon in possession of a firearm.
