Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist officially announces run for Michigan’s top office

Lieutenant Governor Garlin Gilchrist formally announced his bid to become the governor of Michigan.

Gilchrist has worked alongside Governor Gretchen Whitmer since she was elected in 2019.

The native Detroiter says that if elected, one of his goals will be to keep young talent in Michigan.

“It’s not OK with me for any Michigan parent to lie awake at night worrying that their kids might only achieve their very best somewhere else.

But if we make the right choices today, the right investments today, we can grow old with our children nearby. And our grandchildren by our sides because they would see, they would feel and they will know that Michigan is not only a great place for them to take their next step, it’s the best place to do so.”

Local 4 interviewed Gilchrist ahead of Tuesday’s (March 11) announcement. The entire conversation will air on Sunday on Flashpoint.

You’ll hear his vision for Detroit and the role he says it should play in Michigan’s economy.

Gilchrist is now one of six running for Michigan’s top office.

State House minority leader Eric Nesbit and Genesis County Republican Anthony Hudson of Grand Blanc are running on the Republican side.

Detroit Mayor Mike Duggan is running as an independent.

Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson and Genesee County Sheriff Chris Swanson are both trying to capture the Democratic nomination.
