Man dies after ice rescue in Livingston County; firefighter injured

Man was said to be wind sailing before falling through ice

LIVINGSTON COUNTY, Mich. – A man has died following an ice rescue operation on Lake Chemung in Livingston County.

The incident occurred at 2:10 p.m. on Wednesday (March 12) when the man was wind sailing before falling through the ice.

Police said the rescue operation faced significant challenges due to the ice thawing out from the warm weather, making it harder for rescuers to reach the man.

The U.S. Coast Guard airlifted the man out of the frozen water. Once onshore, he was transferred to Livingston County EMS, where CPR was performed.

Despite the efforts of the rescue team, the man was pronounced dead at the scene.
