Officials said they were dispatched to a home in the 27000 block of Railroad Street near 11 Mile Road and Van Dyke Avenue following a report of a domestic disturbance around 9:58 p.m.
Police said a woman informed them that her boyfriend was inside the home armed with a knife and possibly hiding under a bed.
The woman said that he had threatened to harm officers with weapons.
After fleeing the residence on foot, police said the 41-year-old man from Warren was located near George Merrelli Drive and Lorna Avenue, still armed with the knife.
Officials said despite multiple commands to drop the knife, the man refused, causing them to deploy a taser, which proved ineffective.
Police said the man continued to ignore their commands before shooting him.
The 41-year-old man was taken to a Metro Detroit hospital, where he later died from his injuries.
Officials said the man had a history of police encounters for domestic violence, disorderly conduct, and assaults on officers.
Police said he also had active warrants for domestic violence and assaults on law enforcement at the time of the shooting.
Investigators are considering potential mental health factors, and no officers or other people at the scene were injured.
As a result of the shooting, four officers were placed on administrative leave pending the investigation’s outcome.
