DETROIT – A new casual bar is now open in Detroit’s Midtown.
Dirty Shake opened in the red brick building at the corner of Forest and Second avenues, according to a release on Friday, March 14.
It was opened by the award-winning team behind Chartreuse Kitchen & Cocktails, Freya & Dragonfly and The Oakland, but offers a “laid-back” and “no frills” experience, unlike the formal dining setting of the team’s other restaurants.
“We’re just happy to be here,” says Sandy Levine, co-owner of Dirty Shake. “This part of Midtown is one of the few neighborhoods where people who lived here 15 or 20 years ago are still around. We want to honor that history while also welcoming students and newcomers. This is a place where all kinds of people can gather, have a good time, and make it their own.”
The bar is open daily and will have the following hours:
- Monday-Thursday and Sundays: 11:30 a.m. to midnight:
- Fridays and Saturdays: 11:30 a.m. to 2 p.m.
The bar seats 40 people inside and 50 outside on its wraparound patio. There’s a roll-up garage door with counter seating on both sides, a cozy lounge area and three TV’s.
Kamalani Overall, who also runs the cocktail program at The Oakland, has created a drink menu that includes boozy Hummer and Dole Whip shakes, twists on Long Island’s, a variety of beers and more.
There are also non-alcoholic beverages available for purchase.
When it comes to food, Dirty Shake will offer smoked chicken wings and burgers, rice flour-battered cauliflower with pepper jam, cilantro, and scallion and other items.
“We’re not reinventing bar food, just paying attention to the details,” says Chef-Partner Doug Hewitt. “Take our wings — between the brine, the cure, the smoke, and the fry, it’s a three-day process. But at the end of the day, it’s still chicken wings. It’s something that just goes great with a beer or cocktail.”
Takeout and delivery options are available.
Guests will be able to partake in fun activities at Dirty Shake, including taking Polaroid photos, which they can keep or pin on the wall at the bar.
The bar is located at 4642 Second Avenue.
