Sex offender from Madison Heights arrested for allegedly possessing child pornography for a second time

Scott Buhl (Michigan Department of Corrections)

OAKLAND COUNTY, Mich. – A Madison Heights man was arrested for apparently admitting to police of possessing child pornography after serving time for possessing child sexually abusive material in Macomb County.

According to court documents, Scott Buhl, a registered sex offender in Michigan, told law enforcement he bought and downloaded images of child sexually abusive material while police were executing a search warrant at his home.

The investigation began when authorities assigned to the Michigan ICAC Task Force in February 2025 reviewed a National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) cyber tip reported by Google.

The cyber tip reported that someone was uploading about 157 files of Child Sexually Abusive Material to a Google Drive account from November or December 2024.

The tip provided email addresses, a username “Scott Buhl,” IP addresses, a date of birth, and the files of suspected Child Sexually Abusive Material.

Investigators connected the tip with two other tips from NCMEC, one from Dropbox and another from Google, which resulted in a total of 478 files being submitted to the NCMEC. All three tips, authorities said, were associated with the name “Scott Buhl.”

Files associated with the cyber tips were viewed by investigators. They said at least one image in each cyber tip met the definition of child pornography.

Officials said numerous files of Child Sexually Abusive Material were found in Buhl’s Google Drive account. According to court documents, the GPA coordinates of the images returned to Buhl’s home in Madison Heights.

Law enforcement executed a search warrant at Buhl’s home on Feb. 27, 2025, and conducted a post-Miranda interview with Buhl. He reportedly admitted that he purchased and received Child Sexually Abusive Material online and saved the images. He later reportedly said he saved one of the videos that was sent to him, and he emailed it to himself.

Previous conviction

Buhl was previously convicted in 2018 for possessing child sexually abusive material in Macomb County. He is a registered sex offender in Michigan.

Man had doll in bedroom

While investigating the cyber tips against Buhl, authorities saw he had an image of a man, suspected to be him, engaging in sexual activity with what looked like a toddler.

When investigators were executing a search warrant at his home, they found a toddler doll in Buhl’s bedroom. Authorities said the doll’s appearance matched the image found in Buhl’s Google Drive, which investigators initially believed was a real child.
