Detroit celebrates 67th annual St. Patrick’s Day parade

DETROIT – The luck of the Irish arrived early in Detroit as the 67th annual St. Patrick’s Parade made its way through Corktown on Sunday.

Up to 100,000 spectators gathered to marvel at the vibrant floats, marching bands, and color guard units.

Julie Finkbeiner, a parade spectator, remarked on the sense of community the event fosters, highlighting the various activities and festive atmosphere. Her family attended to watch a niece perform with her band.

Mike Kelly, co-chairman of the St. Patrick’s Parade, expressed his honor in seeing families and children enjoying the event.

Dignitaries from Ireland, including Deputy Mayor Mary Linehan Foley of Cork County Council, joined the celebration.

“It’s a celebration of the Irish people that live in the U.S. whether it was their grandfather, great-grandfather that came over. Very, very proud people,” she said.

The day kicked off with the Corktown Races, which saw about 3,000 participants. Eric Kibler, from Downtown Runners and Walkers, shared his enthusiasm for supporting the running community and participating in neighborhood festivities.

As the parade commenced, Michigan Avenue was awash in a sea of green, celebrating Irish heritage. It’s considered one of the largest St. Patrick’s parades in the nation.

The Detroit St. Patrick’s Parade, organized by the United Irish Societies (UIS), brings together people from various cultures to celebrate Irish culture and create lasting memories. The UIS, comprising over 35 Irish organizations across Metro Detroit, ensures the parade and other philanthropic efforts continue to thrive.

The UIS hosted its first St. Patrick’s Parade in Dearborn, Michigan, in 1958. The parade route follows Michigan Avenue through Corktown, named after the Irish immigrants from County Cork who settled in Detroit.
