Michigan State Police trooper shoots Macomb County man armed with long gun

MACOMB COUNTY, Mich. – Michigan State Police said a trooper shot a Chesterfield man armed with a long gun Sunday afternoon.

The shooting happened near Van Dyke and 35 Mile in Bruce Township on March 16, 2025, at around 4 p.m.

According to Michigan State Police, a trooper heard radio traffic about a “be on the lookout” for a Jeep SUV involved in an alleged felonious assault in Shelby Township.

The trooper saw the Jeep SUV travel off Van Dyke to the right side into a cornfield. When the trooper pulled alongside the Jeep, police said the 31-year-old driver from Chesterfield exited the SUV with a long gun.

The trooper then shot the 31-year-old in the leg.

The Chesterfield man was taken to a local hospital for medical treatment. The trooper was not hurt, according to police.

The investigation is ongoing, and an investigator’s report will be forwarded to the Attorney General’s office.

Per department policy, the trooper was placed on administrative leave.

“Currently, there is a lot of on-scene work to do. Detectives from the Third District IRT are processing the scene with our forensic laboratory, writing search warrants and our drone team is mapping the scene,” said F/Lt. Mike Shaw. “The investigation pends interviews with the suspect as well as review of body and vehicle cameras and any other evidence from the area.”
