TROY, Mich. – An employee at Corewell hospital in Troy spoke to Local 4 about an active shooter situation on Thursday morning.
Police have confirmed that shots were fired at Corewell Health Beaumont Hospital in Troy. At least one person was injured, according to authorities.
As of 8:30 a.m. Thursday, officers were searching the building floor-to-floor. ATF agents are also at the hospital to help police.
Barbara, a medical assistant at the hospital, said she was just arriving to work when a coworker started screaming at her to “get back.”
“Get back into my vehicle, there’s an active shooter,” she said. “I saw police officers in the parking garage with their guns drawn, walking in a line and just a bunch of sirens. I was just getting ready to walk in to punch in for the day.”
She said she didn’t see a shooter or hear any gunshots.
“It’s scary,” she said. “You go to your workplace thinking you’re going to be safe, but we practice these drills, and I kind of thought maybe it was a drill, because they do have drills, but when I saw the SWAT on the building, I knew it wasn’t.”
She said the hospital has one large parking structure, and that’s where she was trying to get inside the building. Workers park in the lot and walk across to the parking garage.
The parking structure has instant access to the building, with security officers who walk around, she said. But there’s not an official check-in point, so it could be possible for someone to walk right into the hospital, she said.
She said she’s heard rumors that “there’s an active shooter.”
“I don’t know if there were shots fired or anything like that,” she said. “I’m just worried about my coworkers and patients. I hope that they’re safe. I hope nobody got hurt.”
