CAIR Michigan threats lead to 18-month prison sentence for 73-year-old man

Michael Shapiro, 73, has been sentenced to 18 months in prison for issuing death threats to the Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) Michigan Chapter.

Sentencing occurred on Thursday (March 20) in Detroit.

Court documents reveal that Shapiro, a resident of West Palm Beach, Florida, made three threatening phone calls to CAIR’s office in Canton.

The voicemails, left in December 2023, contained violent threats against the organization and its members.

  • Dec. 8, 2023: “I’m going to kill you bastards. I’m going to kill you bastards.”
  • Dec. 14, 2023: “I’m going to kill you mother f*****g bastards. Muslims! I’m going to kill you motherf******. I’m going to kill you! I’m going to kill you! I’m going to kill you!”
  • Dec. 15, 2023: “You’re a violent people. Why do you come to America? Why do you come to Europe? Motherf******. You’re violent. You’re killers. You’re rapists. I’m going to kill you motherf******!”

Shapiro pleaded guilty on Dec. 3, 2024, to transmitting a threat in interstate commerce.

He admitted targeting CAIR due to the religion and national origin of its staff and those it assists.
