HILLSDALE COUNTY, Mich. – A man was extradited from Georgia to Michigan last week to be arraigned on charges in connection to sexually assaulting a minor, officials announced.
James Carter, 62, formerly of Prescott, was arraigned on one count of first-degree criminal sexual conduct and two counts of accosting a child for immoral purposes, according to a release from Michigan Attorney General Dana Nessel’s office. If convicted, he faces up to life in prison for the criminal sexual conduct charge.
In 2008, Carter allegedly sexually assaulted a minor and accosted her, along with a second victim, for immoral purposes.
The Hillsdale County Prosecuting Attorney’s Office initially issued charges against Carter in 2011.
Now, more than a decade later, he was extradited to Hillsdale to face charges as part of Operation Survivor Justice, which is a partnership between the attorney general, local prosecutors, and the U.S. Marshals Service “to locate, apprehend, and return to Michigan fugitive offenders with outstanding sexual assault warrants,” according to the release.
“Operation Survivor Justice has proven that those who flee criminal allegations cannot evade accountability by crossing state lines,” Nessel said. “I am proud to partner with the U.S. Marshals Service and county prosecutors across Michigan on this important work and remain committed to seeing justice delivered for these victims.”
Carter was given a $100,000 cash bond and is expected to be back in court again on April 2.
