Dearborn Heights neighborhood ‘once again’ prepares for flooding ahead of severe weather

For those living on Hanover Street, proximity to Ecorse Creek is the problem

DEARBORN HEIGHTS, Mich. – A Dearborn Heights neighborhood is once again preparing to flood.

For those living on Hanover Street, proximity to Ecorse Creek is the problem.

Homes surrounding the creek have fallen victim to severe flooding during heavy rains for decades.

With heavy rain forecast for Wednesday (April 2), Local 4 talked with neighbors about how they prepare for possible flooding.

While some residents rely on sandbags, Sharon Shank has resorted to flood insurance after having significant flooding in her basement.

“We had our air conditioning, our floor vents, everything was damaged last time (and) we had to replace everything,” Shank said. “It cost like $30,000.”

Across the street, Dawn Wierciak clears out her basement and hopes for the best.

“Nothing you can do,” said Wierciak. “You can’t stop water.”

Local 4 has talked with city officials in the past about their commitment to fixing the ongoing problem.

However, residents don’t expect a solution anytime soon.

“We’ve been promised for 22 years that they were doing things. They don’t do nothing,” Shank said.
