Person in custody after 3 bodies found in burning car in Detroit

$5K reward offered for information

DETROIT – A person of interest has been taken into custody in connection with the three dead bodies found in a burning car on Detroit’s west side.

The car fire was found at about 6 a.m. Sunday, April 6, near the intersection of 30th and Milford streets. Police said the bodies were burned beyond recognition and are working with the families to make a positive identification.

Investigators are trying to figure out if the three were dead before the fire or if they were burned alive.

Police said the man was not cooperating with the investigators, but they say he is the ex-boyfriend of one of the three victims.

Detroit Assistant police Chief Charles Fitzgerald said the victims are a mother, her daughter, and the daughter’s 9-year-old niece.

Investigators said Monday (April 7) that they believed the mother and daughter were shot.

They say the child was stabbed in the neck before their bodies were driven to an alley near 30th and Milford streets on the city’s west side and set on fire.

After the discovery, police say they tracked a person of interest to a home on Detroit’s east side where they found a 4-year-old boy home alone, and unharmed.

The investigation is ongoing.

A reward of $5,000 is being offered for information that may lead to an arrest.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Detroit Police Department or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-SPEAK UP.
