The crash happened just before 4 a.m. Monday, April 7, near Nine Mile Road. The driver remains in critical condition after being ejected from the vehicle.
The crash occurred on westbound I-94 near 9 Mile Road, just before Monday morning’s commute. The Dodge Charger was left unrecognizable after the wreck, and police reported that the solo crash ejected the 27-year-old driver.
Investigators revealed that the events in St. Clair Shores began about 20 minutes earlier in Sterling Heights.
“The suspect was going through red lights. He was doing everything he possibly could to get away,” said Capt. Mario Bastianel of the Sterling Heights Police Department.
Just after 3 a.m., a 911 call came in from a resident reporting someone actively stealing their white Chevrolet Camaro from the driveway. Flock cameras detected the stolen vehicle in the area of Metro Parkway and Dequindre Road, prompting officers to notice another suspicious car — a black Dodge Charger.
The driver led officers on a pursuit, winding through Warren and I-696 before reportedly veering off an exit ramp for I-94 after briefly getting off it.
As Michigan State Police investigate the crash site, Sterling Heights police praised its officers’ actions.
“Our officers were risking their lives last night in the mix of this pursuit, trying to capture this individual who cared nothing about anybody’s safety,” Capt. Bastianel stated.
Police are still searching for the stolen Camaro.
