DETROIT – A portion of I-94 in Detroit will close this weekend for bridge demolition.

Crews are scheduled to remove the McClellan Avenue overpass, which requires I-94 to be closed in both directions between I-75 and M-3 (Gratiot Avenue), according to the Michigan Department of Transportation.

The closure is scheduled to start at 8 p.m. on Friday, April 11, with both directions expected to reopen by 5 a.m. on Monday, April 14.

Before the freeway closure, crews will close all entrance ramps to westbound I-94 from Cadieux Road to M-3, and all eastbound entrance ramps from West Grand Boulevard to M-53, according to MDOT.

The ramps are also expected to reopen by Monday morning.

MDOT says the following detours will be in place:

  • Westbound I-94 through traffic will be detoured via southbound M-3 and northbound I-75 back to westbound I-94
  • Eastbound I-94 traffic will be detoured via southbound I-75 and northbound M-3 back to eastbound I-94.

The McClellan Avenue overpass was originally built in 1957 and closed in 2024 because of its structural conditions.

The demolition work was initially scheduled for a different weekend, but had to be postponed because equipment needed for the demolition was in an area that was affected by seasonal weight restrictions.

It won’t be replaced as there are future upgrades scheduled for the I-94/M-3 interchange, according to MDOT.
