DNA links suspect to 1997-2004 sexual assaults in Detroit

Authorities urge potential victims to come forward

DETROIT – A 51-year-old man is facing multiple felonies after a string of sexual assaults from 1997 to 2004.

Authorities believe there could be more victims and anyone who believes they may have been assaulted is asked to contact the Wayne County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force at 313-224-2782.

Akida Diaba Dudley was arrested Monday, April 14, 2025, accused of three sexual assaults between 1997 and 2004, but prosecutors said there are other cases still under investigation.

Dudley was taken into custody after untested sexual assault kits linked him to three assaults.

June 9, 1997, assault

According to authorities, a 30-year-old woman was abducted at knifepoint while waiting at a bus stop in Detroit near Grand River and West Warren avenues. Dudley allegedly forced the woman into his car, drove her to a secluded area, where he sexually assaulted her and fled, leaving her with minimal clothing.

Sept. 22, 1997, assault

Prosecutors said a 16-year-old girl was waiting at a bus stop near Livernois and Fenkell avenues when she accepted a ride from Dudley. Once in the car, Dudley allegedly threatened her with an ice pick and sexually assaulted her when she refused his demands for sex. He then dropped her off nearby.

Aug. 9, 2004, assault

Authorities believe Dudley is responsible for another teen’s sexual assault, an 18-year-old girl who was coerced into a car at knife-point near Fenkell and Wyoming avenues. She was driven to an unknown location where she was sexually assaulted before being released on Seven Mile Road.

Arrest, charges

In all three instances, a sexual assault kit was taken and turned over to police, but they were not tested at the time. The Wayne County Prosecutor’s Office have been going through the backlog and testing the kits since 2009.

Dudley was taken into custody Monday, April 14. In each case, Dudley was charged with one count each of first-degree criminal sexual conduct (use of a weapon) and third-degree criminal sexual conduct (force and coercion).

After being charged with six sexual assault felonies, Dudley was denied bond and remanded to jail.

His probable cause conference is scheduled for April 28.

Anyone who believes they may have been assaulted is asked to contact the Wayne County Sexual Assault Kit Task Force at 313-224-2782.
