The 63-year-old ran for governor in 2010 but lost in the GOP primary.
Cox served as attorney general for Michigan from 2003 to 2011.
According to his campaign, he was the first Republican to hold that office in about 50 years. He also served in the United States Marine Corps and was a veteran homicide prosecutor.
Michigan Democratic Party chair Curtis Hertal issued a statement in response to Cox’s announcement.
Not only has Mike Cox fallen down the rabbit hole of Maga extremism, as attorney general, he wasted tax payer dollars in an attempt to block over 700,000 Michigan citizen from access to health care.
Whether it’s opposing health care for Michiganders, attacking public education, or standing with anti-abortion groups, Mike Cox wasn’t right for Michigan when he ran and lost 15 years ago, and he’s not right for Michigan now."
