The White House Easter egg roll returns this year. The tradition dates back to 1878, when a group of children walked up to the White House, hoping to be allowed to play egg-rolling games on the lawn. Rutherford B. Hayes, the president at the time, gave permission for the kids to play.
Soon after, Easter Monday egg rolling at the White House became a tradition. The event became so popular, that the number of guests had to be limited.

This year’s White House Easter egg roll is today (Monday, April 21). The South Lawn of the White House is filled with family-friendly activities like story times, games, live entertainment, and the traditional Easter egg roll.
The event is free, but limited spots were available. Participants were chosen through an online lottery that was open March 4 – March 10. The selected families were notified by email.
The 2025 event is the first to include corporate sponsorships. YouTube, Meta, and Amazon are some of the sponsors.
The White House chose to continue using real eggs this year. Farmers typically donate around 30,000 eggs for the event.
Each year, souvenir wooden eggs are given to children attending the egg roll.
