Non-fatal shooting leaves teen in serious condition on Detroit’s west side

Teen is listed in temporary serious condition

DETROIT – A teen has been hospitalized after a non-fatal shooting on Detroit’s west side.

The shooting occurred on Wednesday (April 23) at 4 p.m. in the 17100 block of West 7 Mile Road and Gilchrist Street between the teen and two suspects.

“Early this afternoon, shortly before 4 p.m. we had a non-fatal shooting that occurred at the intersection of West 7 Mile and Gilchrest where we stand now. It appears to be argument related between two suspects and our victim. The victim is a juvenile in this incident.”

Detroit police Captain Matthew Bray

Police said the teen is listed in temporary serious condition.

“We’re very happy that the juvenile survived the encounter. We’re working actively at the scene at this time, we’re working actively with our leads. We do have a person of interest that we are looking at already and we’re looking to bring this case to a conclusion relatively quickly.”

The incident was due to an argument, and although it happened in Detroit, Bray said it’s a nationwide problem.

“I don’t think this is a Detroit issue as I think it’s a nationwide problem. People tend to resort to gun violence rather a dispute in another manner.

So obviously the police department and the city, the message is don’t use a gun to solve your issues and come to a resolution without harming anyone else.”
