Detroit Pistons star Cade Cunningham is catching some eyes for the NBA’s top award.

The NBA released their updated list of the top ten players in the running for the MVP. The list is curated by NBA writers, it’s based on their opinions.

Cunningham, in the midst of a breakout season, along with leading the Pistons into playoff contention, debuted on the list at No. 9 this week, the first time he’s ever been ranked, and the first time any Piston has been listed.

Cunningham is averaging 25.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 8.3 assists per game in January.

“Cunningham has arguably been a top-five player since the calendar flipped to 2025, and actually, he has been solid all season. It’s just that his flow from November through December was done in the shadows. But now that the Pistons are rolling — they’re 7-2 this month with an impressive road win over the Knicks on Monday — the shine is on him," NBA writer Shaun Powell wrote in the updated rankings.

Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Nikola Jokić and Giannis Antetokounmpo lead the way as the top three candidates for the MVP award.
