TheRide, Washtenaw County partner to provide shuttles to mass COVID vaccination site
ANN ARBOR โ The Ann Arbor Area Transportation Authority (TheRide) has partnered with the Washtenaw County Health Department to provide transportation to and from the countyโs mass COVID vaccination site at Eastern Michigan Universityโs Convocation Center. Service began on Wednesday and anyone who has a scheduled appointment at the EMU site can use the shuttles. โThis is an important step in making our mass vaccination site at EMU more accessible. Weโre thankful to the TheRide for working with us to provide transportation at no cost to riders,โ Loveluck said in a news release. The shuttles operate every 30 minutesThe shuttles are limited to 20 individuals per vehicle.

Dearborn nonprofit to offer COVID-19 vaccinations for 50+ phase
DEARBORN, Mich. โ Dearborn nonprofit ACCESS is partnering with Meijer to offer COVID-19 vaccinations to residents in the 50+ group starting March 11. Starting Monday (March 8), any Michigan residents age 50 and up with pre-existing medical conditions or disabilities will be eligible to make an appointment for the COVID-19 vaccine. Caregiver family members and guardians who care for children with special health care needs will also be eligible to receive the vaccine. Dearborn nonprofit distributes 1,250 COVID-19 care packages to local families
DEARBORN, Mich. โ A Dearborn-based nonprofit held a drive-thru event this week to distribute 1,250 COVID-19 care packages to families. ACCESS, the largest Arab American community nonprofit in the U.S., partnered with The Coronavirus Task Force on Racial Disparities to distribute 1,250 care packages filled with $100 worth of protective and hygienic essentials that will help families stay safe during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as childrenโs educational games and activities. Volunteers from the UAW Local 600 helped pass out packages at ACCESS headquarters on Tuesday morning and afternoon. Earlier this year, ACCESS held its annual back-to-school health fair with a drive thru event, providing more than 2,000 students with safely packaged meals, backpacks, school supplies, sporting goods, oral hygiene kits, scheduled physicals and immunizations, surprise giveaways and more, all at no cost to attending families. ACCESS has also been hosting free COVID-19 testing sites during the pandemic.
Michigan, US charities raise millions in wake of Beirut port blast
DEARBORN, Mich. โ When Manal Saab heard that a massive explosion had struck Beirut, she grabbed her phone, frantically trying to reach loved ones there. โOtherwise, they wouldnโt have survived it,โ said Saab, an American citizen who lives in Fenton, Michigan, near Flint, but was born in Lebanon. Knowing that her family and friends were safe, a feeling of relief washed over Saab. More than half of that amount was delivered via a FedEx-donated airlift that also included relief supplies from the American Task Force on Lebanon and the Lebanon Relief Project. They just wanted something to immediately give to, they wanted all that pain to basically get out and give something positive,โ Saab said.
Dearborn-based foundation raises $180K in ongoing effort to support Lebanon relief
DEARBORN, Mich. โ A national Arab American foundation, based in Dearborn, has raised more than $180,000 to help support the ongoing relief efforts in Lebanon following the deadly explosion in August. Since the explosion, the continued fundraising efforts benefitting the Lebanon Relief Project through CAAPโs Disaster Relief Fund have resulted in over $180,000 raised so far. Funds have been used to help the Lebanon Relief Project airlift over $12.7 million in high value medications and supplies to Beirut on August 24, and most recently, over $6 million on September 29. 100% of all donations raised through CAAPโs continued fundraising efforts will go towards airlifting essential supplies and equipment and supporting relief efforts in Lebanon. A national Arab American foundation, based in Dearborn, is launching its second fundraising campaign to help support the ongoing relief efforts in Lebanon following the deadly explosion earlier this month. Even before the explosion, Lebanon was dealing with increasing poverty, economic collapse and corruption, while in the midst of a pandemic. The Center for Arab American Philanthropy (CAAP) launched its first relief campaign on Aug. 5, granting $75,155 to the Lebanese Red Cross, to support their on-the-ground efforts. The second campaign will support the work of several nonprofits including AFYA Foundation, ANERA and Direct Relief under the coordinated efforts of the American Task Force on Lebanon (ATFL), to urgently airlift medical and pharmaceutical supplies and equipment to Beirut. COVID-19 antibody testing in Sterling Heights
STERLING HEIGHTS, Mich. โ With testing for active coronavirus becoming more readily available, thereโs a new push for antibody testing as well. Cities, organizations and employers can request the team to visit; Wednesday they were in Sterling Heights testing essential workers. โWhat this testing will do is give us a better sense of how many people have been infected by the virus,โ said Sterling Heights mayor Michael Taylor. โMaybe thereโs an ability to donate blood and plasma to help other people if we were exposed to it,โ he said. Again, this testing is being done and paid for by the Wayne State Physicians Group, ACCESS and Ford.
Dearborn partnership offers small business relief grants: How to apply
DETROIT โ Dearborn, in partnership with community organizations, is launching a small business relief grant program for businesses struggling during the coronavirus pandemic. The Dearborn Small Business Relief Grant application opens on Monday, April 27, with a May 1 deadline, for grants up to $5,000 providing small businesses with 17 employees or less and sole proprietors located in Dearborn working capital during the COVD-19 crisis. Business owners who previously have been awarded a Michigan Small Business Relief Grant or the Wayne County/TCF Small Business Relief Loan Fund are not eligible to apply. Through a partnership initiated by NEI, the Dearborn Small Business Grant is being led and administered by ACCESS, the City of Dearborn, East and West Dearborn Downtown Development Authorities, and Warren and Dix/Vernor Business District Improvement Authorities. โThis crisis has been a gut punch for every business owner out there,โ said Cristina Sheppard-Decius, executive director of the East and West Dearborn DDAs.
