Detroit shop serving up a cup of Joe with love
Read full article: Detroit shop serving up a cup of Joe with loveWhen you first walk in, you may think the Gathering Coffee Company is just another coffee house, but it isnโt, and, the writingโs on the walls. โAlone is nothing that you are,โ said, Emily Steffen, owner of the Gathering Coffee Company. This is a passage written on the walls of her business and a term she says sheโs used since college, not knowing one day it would be the mission statement for her coffee shop, โI wanted to create a very intentional space with the community that incorporated both art, storyelling, the concept of gathering together over a product that has no time frame,โ Steffen told โLive in the Dโs,โ April Morton. That product she says is coffee, and unlike a meal that once itโs eaten you get up and leave, typically when enjoying a cup of coffee with someone, you stay awhile, and are more engaged, even with those you may not know. Thatโs a space she says is important to have in our community. โThat is why we exist, thatโs why weโre here to be better, to grow and to have the community be the one whoโs writing our story and weโre just listening and advocating for that and constantly changing with the community, with ourselves and just with everything weโre going through right now,โ Steffen said.

Black coffee linked to reduced risk of heart failure, data shows
Read full article: Black coffee linked to reduced risk of heart failure, data showsNew data from the American Heart Association suggests drinking coffee straight black can reduce the risk of heart failure in the long term. Drinking one or more cups of plain (black), leaded coffee a day was associated with a long-term reduced risk of heart failure, according to a review of diet data from three major studies using analytic tools from the American Heart Association. โWe identified multiple dietary and behavioral risk factors for cardiovascular disease outcomes including marital status, red meat consumption, whole milk consumption, and coffee consumption. Among these dietary variables, increasing coffee consumption was associated with decreasing long-term risk of heart failure (HF) congruently in FHS (Framingham Heart Study), ARIC (Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities), and CHS (Cardiovascular Heart Study). Further study is warranted to better define the role, possible causality, and potential mechanism of coffee consumption as a potential modifiable risk factor for HF.โ American Heart AssociationMore: Healthy Heart news

Your first cup of coffee might not be helping as much as you think. Hereโs why.
Read full article: Your first cup of coffee might not be helping as much as you think. Hereโs why.Hereโs what you may not know: There are prime times during your day to drink coffee to get the best effects, and those times aren't necessarily first thing in the morning. If youโre drinking coffee during that timeframe, youโre drinking it at a time when youโre already naturally at your maximum level of alertness. Drinking coffee during your natural cortisol peak can cause you to develop a tolerance to caffeine. โIn other words, the same cup of morning coffee will become less effective,โ Miller said. Even if coffee is the first thing you want to taste in the morning, if youโre using it for a pick-me-up, it might behoove you to try waiting a little while.
